How to install a basin bottom drain? How to install a bottom drain? How to install a bottom drain? Many of you ask us if the bottom drain is mandatory in the pond.
Everything will depend on whether your installation is carried out by pumping or gravity. We also recommend them in pool-type pressure installations.
The drain of a swimming pool can be compared to that of a bathtub. In the pond, well optimized, it allows more possibilities than your bath :) Once the bottom drain is installed, the hole of the drain is protected by a protective grid to prevent fish from passing through.
This is often one of the regrets of our pond owners who have a gravity installation (see below).
Pumping installation:
Installation for a main drain:
A main drain is a bit like a siphon in a sink. It allows the waste to be evacuated on the bottom. Traditionally, bottom drains have mainly been used in swimming pools.
Many pond boobies need to clean their ponds in the spring and fall, and these plugs, when combined with a good pump + pre-filter, make their job a lot easier. It clears debris from the pond bottom drain to the filters, where it can then be removed.
A bottom drain is a drain connected to the pond filter. Dirt sediments on the bottom are thus removed and transported directly through the drain.
When installing a pond, the drain should be placed at the deepest point of the pond. Especially in the case of koi ponds, this is an effective method of removing waste and bringing it up to a screen filter or other filtration solution. Bottom sludge is disastrous for clear water and a pathogen for your fish (bacteria).
Here is an example of the principle of a pond by bottom drain (under pressure) :
Here is an example of the principle of a pond by bottom drain (in gravity) :
Bottom drains use a mechanism called “gravity flow”. Due to the water pressure, water containing dirt will flow by itself through the drain into the multi-chamber filter.
The pump will be in the dry position, after the filter, to return the filtered water to the pool. By applying a drain, the filter will always be filled with water, even in the event of a power loss
For a pond installation with gravity filtration, we recommend that you work with 110MM pipes. This will allow you to bring as much water as possible into your filtration system.
It is also an excellent solution if one day you need to unclog a drain. Also favor the use of elbows at 45°C.
For an installation under pressure, there are different calculation methods to determine the optimum section to use. Most of the time, we work with 63mm sections, like the ones you can find by clicking here.
Or install a bottom drain? We recommend that you install a bottom drain in a basin. It is often in a place where waste disposal will be optimal.
The bottom drain is a part to be sealed just like the skimmer or the backflows in a natural swimming pool. It is often complicated, if not impossible, to do it later, without incurring major work.
The different types of bottom drains
We recommend placing the bottom drain at the deepest point in a pond. It is generally placed on a slope. You can place it at the bottom of the pool or at the foot of the wall of the deepest area.
When you install a main drain , before pouring the concrete, we recommend that you fill the pipes with water. It is common if the pipes are filled with air that the pipe rises during the pouring of concrete.
