The lotus flower represents the purity of body and soul. Allegorically, the muddy water in which the lotus grows is a symbol of attachment and carnal desires; the immaculate flower that emerges from it represents the promise of the salvation of the soul. Legend has it that when the Buddha took his first steps, lotus flowers grew everywhere he set foot.

The lotus is also associated with longevity, and for good reason: seeds found in China's Liaoning province germinated after lying dormant for over 1,300 years!
