How to take good care of your goldfish

In this article, we will discuss the 10 most common mistakes we make when we have a goldfish.

The 10 mistakes not to make when we have a goldfish

The first mistake often made is buying a goldfish bowl. Indeed, a goldfish will quickly become quite large, reaching 30 cm as an adult. It is therefore obvious that a bowl is much too small to hold a goldfish. In addition, there is no filtration system and the shape is unsuitable for fish. Opt instead for an aquarium of about sixty liters with filtration.

The second mistake is overfeeding your fish. We are always afraid of not feeding our goldfish enough and this is a very common mistake. On the contrary, the more you give him to eat, the less it will be good for his health. Already, a good part of the food you give will go to the bottom of the aquarium and make waste unnecessarily to pollute the water. In addition, they must be fed several times a day, 2 to 3 times a day, in small quantities because their digestive system is designed for frequent small quantities and no large meals.

The third mistake is putting too many fish in one tank. Overcrowding is a common mistake among beginners because we imagine the fish will get bored. We then tend to take a friend, two friends or even three friends and more... and we find ourselves afterwards with a lot of fish in a small volume. An overcrowded aquarium is what very often causes the death of goldfish. We wonder why some people die, it's simply because there is a natural selection taking place.

The water being very polluted because of the excessive pollution due to fish droppings, the weakest will leave first. Always retain 30 to 50 liters of water for a goldfish. So if you have an aquarium, for example of 60 liters, two goldfish maximum will suffice.

The fourth error is not having a filter or having a filter that is too small.

Filtration in an aquarium is absolutely essential. It is therefore imperative to have a good size filter, prefer external filters which are more powerful and much more practical to maintain. This will give you perfectly stable water for your goldfish.

The fifth error is not to target its cycle aquarium and its aquarium, that is to say to start the nitrogen cycle of the aquarium. This is the biological cycle of your aquarium: the path of waste. This cycle is very important because it allows the fish not to swim perpetually in their droppings.

Mistake number six is not changing the water regularly or irregularly enough. You should change your aquarium water a little each week, about a third of the volume of your aquarium. For example, if you have an aquarium of a hundred liters, well you change about 30 liters every week, invariably. Irregular changes are bad for your aquarium, but especially for your fish. It is therefore necessary to change the water little by little every week, a little bit and not to change for example 80% of your water, because you find that it smells bad. If it smells bad or has an abnormal color every week, you have a filter that is too small or you have too many fish.

Mistake number eight is over-cleaning your filter.

An aquarium filter doesn't have to shine like a whistle every week. The filtration media should simply be rinsed quickly with lukewarm water and then put back into the filter. You should therefore never clean your filter, your aquarium from top to bottom. Otherwise, the good bacteria that are in your filter and that play the biological role of your aquarium will be destroyed if you clean your filter too much. Avoid cleaning your filter thoroughly.

The ninth mistake not to make is not to quarantine new fish. It is quite common that we see a drama happen when a new fish arrives or a week or two later. The reason is that often, we do not quarantine this new fish which may be carrying a disease which will declare itself a week after its arrival and therefore contaminate the other fish. To make a quarantine, a new fish that you have just acquired, it is enough to place it in a small tank, right next to the main aquarium, to take special general disinfectant for fish, to put a few drops of it in water to get rid of any germs that may be present. Then wait a week and then, once your fish looks healthy and hasn't developed any disease, you can add it to the main tank.

Finally, the last mistake is not having real plants. Obviously, using plastic plants has advantages since there is no maintenance and there is no fertilizer. You don't have to worry about it more than that. You can easily clean them. The only disadvantage there is going to be is that these plastic plants are of absolutely no use for the biological balance of the aquarium whereas the real plants will help the water to have more oxygen and to absorb the CO2 released by your fish and will also help the filter in its role of cleaning the aquarium.
