If you have read our article/guide on cyanobacteria, you have understood one essential thing. Cyanobacteria are almost never the real problem. They are the symptom of a pond running out of breath.

The good news? In most cases, it is entirely possible to restore a stable body of water without starting from scratch. But this requires thinking like a biologist… not just a treatment applicator.


First step: get the pond moving again

Imagine a room closed for several months. The air becomes heavy. Humidity sets in. Odors appear. The first instinct is not to spray perfume.

We open the windows. For a pond, it’s exactly the same logic. A body of water that no longer circulates gradually becomes oxygen-poor. Some areas stagnate completely. The bottom continues to consume oxygen without ever being replenished.

Result:

  • accumulation of gases;
  • slowing down of beneficial bacteria;
  • gradual increase of sludge;

Second step: gradually reduce the sludge

A very common mistake is to want to remove all the sludge mechanically. In some cases, this is necessary. But very often, it is possible to naturally speed up its breakdown.

Sludge is mainly made up of organic matter:

  • leaves;
  • wood;
  • dead algae;
  • pollen;
  • waste;
  • plants.

The bacteria naturally present in your pond perfectly know how to break down…provided they have enough oxygen. That’s why we always emphasize this sequence:

  1. oxygenate;
  2. get the water moving;
  3. stimulate biology.

Third step: act on phosphorus

Few owners truly understand the role of phosphorus. However… Without available phosphorus, massive proliferation becomes much more difficult. The problem is that sediments sometimes contain a lot of it.

When the bottom lacks oxygen, some of this phosphorus is released into the water. Cyanobacteria then have a true all-you-can-eat buffet. Some mineral solutions can fix this phosphorus and make it much less available. This is the case with Nautex, a very specific chalk for aquatic environments that helps combat eutrophication of aquatic environments.

When the water body analysis shows a high availability of phosphorus, Nautex constitutes a particularly interesting solution. Its goal is not to kill the cyanobacteria.

And when the bloom is already established?
