Bassin à koïs en automne sous les érables – Foudebassin

Pool water quality in autumn: why is it the riskiest season, and should you still add bacteria?

People often think that pond problems end with summer. The opposite is true. Autumn is the season when risks to water quality accumulate: an organic load that skyrockets with the leaves, a biological filter that slows down in the cold, and fish whose defenses weaken at the same time. When managed properly, these few weeks prepare the pond for a calm winter and a spring without unpleasant surprises.

— The short answer

In autumn, monitor the temperature, ammonium, nitrites, KH and pH every week. Gradually reduce feeding and switch to an easy-to-digest food when the water drops below around 15 °C; stop feeding at around 8 to 10 °C. Remove leaves before they sink. Yes, bacteria remain useful as long as the water stays around 10 °C or above: adding them at the beginning of autumn helps break down deposits before winter, whereas in the coldest weather their activity becomes very low.

Why autumn is a risky period

The organic load skyrockets

Leaves, needles, seeds, aquatic plants that wither: within a few weeks, the pond receives more organic matter than it does over several summer months. As it decomposes, this matter consumes oxygen, releases ammonium and phosphorus, and acidifies the water. Some leaves, especially oak leaves, also release tannins that turn the water brown.

The biological filter slows down

Nitrifying bacteria, which transform ammonium into nitrites and then nitrates, see their activity drop as the temperature falls. Below around ten degrees, they slow to a crawl. If you continue feeding as you would in summer, ammonium and nitrites build up.

Fish defenses weaken

Koi carp and goldfish are cold-blooded animals. As the water cools, their metabolism and immune system slow down. However, some opportunistic parasites and bacteria remain active at temperatures where the fish's defenses can no longer keep up: this is why so many health problems appear in autumn and early spring.

Temperature fluctuations

Sunny days and cool nights can cause the temperature to vary by several degrees within 24 hours in a small pond, adding further stress.

What to measure, and how often

Parameter Why in autumn Frequency
Water temperature Guides feeding and bacterial additions Daily, in the morning
Ammonium and nitrites Filter slowing down Weekly
KH and pH Acidification caused by leaves Weekly
Appearance and smell Brown water, rotten-egg smell: anaerobic decomposition At each visit

Adjusting food to the temperature

  • Above approximately 15 °C: normal food, in quantities consumed within a few minutes.
  • Between 15 and 10 °C: wheat-germ-based food, which is easier to digest, in reduced portions, once a day or less.
  • Below 8 to 10 °C: stop feeding. Digestion becomes too slow, and undigested food can cause problems, while the filter can no longer keep up.

A healthy fish that has been well fed during the summer gets through winter on its reserves without difficulty.

Is it still worth adding bacteria in autumn?

Yes, and it is actually a key time, provided you choose the right period. Adding bacteria in early autumn, when the water is still around 12 to 15 °C, has two benefits:

  1. Support the filter as its bacterial community begins to slow down and the organic load increases.
  2. Break down leaf litter and sludge before winter, to prevent them from slowly fermenting under the ice and remaining intact until spring.

However, when the water remains below 8 to 10 °C for an extended period, bacterial activity becomes very low: adding bacteria has little effect, and it is better to focus efforts on mechanically removing leaves and oxygenating the water.

The 5-step autumn schedule

  1. Early September: stretch a net over the pond or install a skimmer before the leaves fall.
  2. September-October: maintenance bacteria, weekly parameter checks, and a gradual switch to autumn food.
  3. October: trim faded plants above the water, remove leaves and vacuum localized deposits.
  4. When the water drops below 10 °C: stop feeding and check the aeration.
  5. Before frost: prepare for winter, and manage the pump and UV according to your setup.

Frequently asked questions

— Can beneficial bacteria be added to a pond in autumn?

Yes, especially in early autumn, as long as the water remains around 10 °C or higher. They support the filter and break down deposits before winter.

— At what temperature should I stop feeding the fish?

Generally around 8 to 10 °C. Between 10 and 15 °C, switch to a digestible food in small portions.

— Why do my fish get sick in autumn?

Because their defenses slow down in the cold while some parasites and bacteria remain active, and water quality deteriorates due to the leaves.

— The water turns brown in autumn - is this serious?

This is often caused by tannins from the leaves. It is not toxic in itself, but it indicates an organic load that should be removed.

In summary

  • Autumn combines organic load, a slower filter and weakened defenses.
  • Measure temperature, ammonium, nitrites, KH and pH every week.
  • Digestible food below 15 °C, stop around 8 to 10 °C.
  • Beneficial bacteria in early autumn, less effective in very cold water.
  • Remove leaves before they sink.
