How to clear cloudy water that isn't green: milky, gray, or particle-laden water

“I bought a UV lamp and my water is still just as cloudy.” When people tell us this, we always ask about the color. If the answer is “whitish,” “gray,” or “milky coffee-colored,” the mystery is solved: UV-C targets algae, and there are none. Cloudy water that is not green almost always comes from free-floating bacteria, mineral particles, or organic debris that is too fine for the filter; it is cleared by treating the source and improving mechanical filtration.

— The short answer

Milky water: this is generally a proliferation of free-floating bacteria after filling a pond, cleaning the filter, or overfeeding; reduce feeding, stop cleaning the filter thoroughly, and let the biology stabilize. Gray or beige water: these are soil or clay particles; cover the sources, improve filtration, and help the particles clump together. Visible particles: the filter or flow rate is insufficient. In none of these cases is UV-C the main solution.

Three types of cloudiness, three mechanisms

To tell them apart, a glass jar is enough. Fill it halfway with water from the pond, leave it to stand overnight in a sheltered place, then look at it in the morning.

Jar test result Nature of the cloudiness Typical situation
Whitish cloudiness, nothing settles Free-floating bacteria New pond, cleaned filter, overfed fish
Fine beige layer at the bottom, clearer water above Clay, silt, soil Bare plant baskets, runoff, koi rooting around
Brown flakes that settle within a few minutes Organic debris Saturated or undersized filter, stirred-up sludge
Stays green Suspended algae UV-C issue; see our articles on green water

Milky water: a matter of biology, not equipment

The white cloudiness that appears a few days after filling a pond, a major cleaning, or overly generous feeding is typical of an explosion of free-floating bacteria. They feed on dissolved organic matter that the filter does not yet process, and multiply so quickly that they cloud the water. The phenomenon is well documented in the literature on fishpond water quality: as long as organic inputs exceed the system's degradation capacity, equilibrium cannot be established.

The solution involves three steps. Greatly reduce feeding, or even stop feeding for two or three days if the fish are healthy. Stop cleaning the filter with tap water or too thoroughly: this is often what triggered the problem. And add starter bacteria to colonize the filter media. Monitor ammonia and nitrites during this period: milky water indicates that the biological filter is overwhelmed, and these are the two compounds that put the fish at risk.

Gray or beige water: particles too fine for the filter

Clay and silt particles are so fine that they remain suspended for entire days and pass through coarse foam. They are found in new ponds filled over earthy ground, after a storm has washed a flower bed into the water, or in koi ponds where the fish rummage through the plant baskets. We regularly see ponds become clear again simply after covering the potting soil in the baskets with five centimeters of gravel.

So start by cutting off the source: gravel on the plant baskets, a small border to divert runoff, and stabilized banks. Then add a finer filtration stage, fine foam or polishing floss, which you should rinse often. Finally, special pond clay can help: according to manufacturers, it promotes the clumping of fine particles into heavier flakes that the filter retains or that settle.

Visible particles: a filter that can no longer keep up

If you see brown flakes floating, the mechanical filter is saturated, bypassed, or too small. Check that the water is properly flowing through the foam and not passing through an overflow. Also check the pump's actual flow rate, often far below the figure on the box once the height and hose length are taken into account. In spring, a yellow film on the surface is often pollen, which a skimmer or fine-mesh net can clear in a few days.

What doesn't work on cloudy, non-green water

Adding a more powerful UV-C: it does not act on clay or suspended organic matter. Draining and refilling: fresh water is added to an unbalanced filter, and the milky film returns. Combining products: a clarifier, then bacteria, then an algaecide in the same week disrupts the balance we are precisely trying to restore. Cloudy water mainly requires a methodical approach and a few weeks of consistency.

Frequently asked questions

— Why did my water become milky after cleaning the filter?

Cleaning removed a large part of the attached bacteria. The dissolved organic matter then benefits free-floating bacteria that cloud the water. Always rinse the foams in pond water, and only partially.

— How long does milky water last?

As a rule of thumb, one to three weeks, while the biological filter catches up with the incoming load. Reducing feeding significantly shortens this period.

— Is pond clay safe for fish?

Clays sold for ponds are intended for use with fish, at the dosage indicated by the manufacturer. Follow it and rinse the filter more often for a few days.

— Can a UV-C help with cloudy water?

Only if the cloudiness is caused by algae. In milky, gray, or debris-laden water, its effect is negligible.

In summary

  • The jar test distinguishes bacteria, clay, debris, and algae.
  • Milky water: reduce feeding, clean the filter gently, add starter bacteria, perform regular tests.
  • Gray or beige water: eliminate the source of soil, use finer filtration, add pond clay.
  • Visible particles: filter and flow rate need reviewing.
  • UV-C only treats green water.
