Nettoyer son étang rapidement en automne – Foudebassin

Clean your pond quickly in autumn: the task order that saves time

On an October Saturday morning, the weather is fine, and you have promised yourself you will “clean the pond.” Three hours later, the vacuum is clogged with leaves, the filter is half-disassembled on the lawn, and the bottom still has not been done. This is the scenario our customers tell us about most often. To clean quickly, the secret is not to work harder but to work in the right order: from top to bottom, from lightest to heaviest, with the filter last. Here is the method we use on the garden ponds we maintain.

— The short answer

Work in five stages: first remove what is floating, then cut back the wilted plants, vacuum only the areas with the most sludge, rinse the filter in the pond water, and finish by topping up the water and putting up the net. For a 10 to 20 m² garden pond, allow roughly half a day. There is no need to empty it: a quick autumn clean is not a dredging operation.

The day before: fifteen minutes that save the morning

Gather your equipment at the water's edge: a large-head pond net, pruning shears or long-handled scissors, a pond vacuum with its hoses, two buckets, a tarp or wheelbarrow for the waste, and long gloves. Check that the vacuum starts and that its bag or foam filter is clean. Feed the fish lightly the day before and not at all on the day itself: they will be less disturbed, and the water will be less cloudy during the work. If you can choose, pick a windless day: the leaves will stay where they are.

The process at a glance

Step Duration (approximate) Time-saving tip
1. Surface 20 to 30 min Start on the windward side, where the leaves accumulate
2. Plants 30 to 45 min Cut directly into the net or onto the tarp
3. Bottom 45 min to 1 h 30 Target two or three areas, not the entire bottom
4. Filter 20 to 40 min Rinse in a bucket of pond water
5. Finishing 20 min Put the net out right away, before the next gust

Step 1: everything floating, before it sinks

A floating leaf is removed in a second. Once waterlogged, it sinks, mixes with the sludge, and turns into a vacuuming job. That is why the surface always comes first. Start on the side where the wind pushes the leaves, sweep the water with broad, slow strokes, and empty the net onto the tarp rather than into a bucket - it is faster. Also remove duckweed and filamentous algae floating in clumps.

Step 2: faded plants, without cutting everything back

Cut the yellowing water lily leaves as close to the base as possible, remove the faded flowers, and cut back the bank plants above the water level. Overly dense oxygenating plants can be thinned by half, but no more: they continue to work as long as the water is not cold. Work directly over the pond net or tarp so you do not let debris fall into the water you have just cleaned.

Step 3: the bottom, but only where it matters

This is where most people lose their afternoon. The aim of a quick clean is not to achieve a perfectly clean bottom, but to remove what will rot throughout the winter. In practice, silt almost always collects in the same places: under the trees, at the foot of the waterfall, around the pump, and at the lowest point. Vacuum these areas and leave the rest. A bottom lightly covered with sediment is nothing unusual and provides shelter for some of the pond's life.

Step 4: the filter last, and never completely

If you clean the filter first, it will immediately become loaded again with everything you stir up afterward. Leave it until the end. Rinse the foam pads in a bucket filled with pond water, not under the tap: chlorine in mains water can harm the bacteria established in the filter, which are valuable as winter approaches. Squeeze the foam pads until they are simply “clean,” not new. Take the opportunity to decide what to do with the UV lamp: in cold water, it is hardly useful anymore.

Step 5: finishing and protection

The vacuum has discharged a little water: slowly top up the level. Then stretch the net over the water, securing it well, so that all the morning's work is not undone by the next gust of wind. If the water is still above about ten degrees, now is the right time to add bacteria that will help break down what remains on the bottom. The biggest time-saving measure in autumn isn't done on cleaning day: it's putting the net in place before the leaves fall.

What can wait until spring

To finish within half a day, you also need to know what not to do. Repotting water lilies, dividing marginal plants, thoroughly dredging a very muddy pond and repairing the liner are best done in spring or late summer. There is also no need to scrub the stones and walls: the brown-green film covering them shelters microorganisms that are useful for maintaining water balance. Finally, completely draining the pond in autumn is almost always a bad idea: it deprives the fish of their “mature” water just before winter.

Frequently asked questions

— How long does it take to clean a pond in autumn?

For a 10 to 20 m² garden pond with the right equipment, roughly half a day. The time mainly depends on the amount of leaves and sludge.

— Should the pond be emptied to clean it in autumn?

No. Autumn cleaning is done with water in place. Completely draining the pond just before winter destabilizes the water and stresses the fish.

— Can the filter be rinsed with tap water?

It is best avoided: chlorine in tap water can harm the filter bacteria. Rinse the foams in a bucket of water drawn from the pond.

— What is the best time for autumn cleaning?

When most of the leaves have fallen but the water is still above around ten degrees, generally in October here.

In summary

  • Winning order: surface, plants, bottom, filter, finishing touches.
  • Only vacuum areas where sludge accumulates.
  • Filter last, rinsed in pond water.
  • Net installed as soon as cleaning is finished, and ideally before the leaves fall.
  • Repotting, dredging and repairs can wait until spring.
