How to hide the edges of a preformed pond? Stones, gravel-covered liner, plants: finishes that last

A preformed pond has many advantages: quick to install, watertight from the outset, and easy to maintain. Its weak point is aesthetic. This strip of black or grey plastic around the water makes the pond look like a container set in the lawn, especially when the level drops a little in summer. Concealing the rim transforms a shell into a pond, provided you never place any weight on that rim. Here are the solutions that work in the long term, along with their advantages and pitfalls.

— The short answer

The most effective method is to lay flat stones or slabs that extend a few centimetres over the water, but rest on a bed of mortar or compacted gravel outside the shell, never on its rim. Complete the look with pebbles, a strip of gravel-covered pond liner on sloping areas, coconut coir planting bags attached to the edge, and trailing plants. Wood decking provides a more architectural finish. Always keep the water level high: a full pond already hides half the problem.

The golden rule: put nothing on the shell

A preformed pond made of polyethylene or polyester is designed to be supported by the soil around it, not to bear a load on its rim. A stone slab placed directly on the edge will eventually make it sag, then crack, or cause the shell to tilt slightly. Any stone, slab, or edging that covers the rim must therefore rest on an independent support: a lean mortar base or well-compacted gravel, built all around the shell, at the same level as its rim or very slightly above it.

Before even thinking about decoration, check that the shell is perfectly level. If it tilts, the rim will be visible on one side whatever you do.

The solutions compared

Solution Result Point to note
Overhanging slabs or flat stones Clean, durable, completely conceals the rim Independent support required
Pebbles and gravel Natural, easy to install Slide into the water if the slope is steep
Gravel-covered pond liner Mineral look right down to the water To be securely attached to the edge
Coconut coir bags and trailing plants Very natural, with living banks Takes a season to become covered
Wood decking Contemporary, creates a place to sit Structure on supports, wood suitable for humid conditions

Slabs and flat stones: the cleanest finish

This is the technique used in the most successful ponds. The stones are laid all around on their base and extend a few centimeters over the water. The shadow cast by this slight overhang is enough to make the rim and upper wall disappear. Choose flat, thick enough stones that will not tip, and alternate sizes to avoid a “tile” effect. The joints can be filled with soil and small ground-cover plants, or with mortar if you want a rigid coping.

The overhang should remain modest: a few centimeters are enough; beyond that, the stone becomes unstable and may tip under a person's weight.

Gravel-coated liner for sloping sides

Some shells have a lower section or a shallow shelf where the rim is particularly visible. A strip of gravel-coated liner, folded over the rim and running down along the wall, gives the appearance of natural gravel extending below the water. Secure it above the rim, beneath stones or soil, and let it hang into the pond. Over time, a light biofilm forms on it and further enhances the natural appearance.

Plants: let vegetation do the work

Plants that trail over the water are the most natural way to make a rim disappear. Along the bank, soft-growing perennials, such as certain low grasses or spreading ground covers, naturally spill over the edge. On the water side, a coconut planting bag suspended from the edge of the shell holds marginal plants that hide the plastic from the inside. Shelf plants placed in baskets can also be positioned very close to the edge to dress up the wall.

Wood for a terrace pond

For a preformed pond integrated into a terrace or contemporary garden, a wooden deck that comes flush with the water is an attractive solution. The structure rests on supports or beams independent of the shell, and the boards extend slightly over the water. Use naturally durable wood or composite wood, and avoid treated wood when the treatment product is unknown, as rainwater runoff ends up in the pond.

Mistakes that ruin the finish

  • Placing stones directly on the shell's rim.
  • Letting garden soil wash into the water with every rainfall: it clouds the pond and feeds algae.
  • Choosing pebbles that are too small on a slope: they eventually end up at the bottom.
  • Using fresh mortar in contact with the water without taking precautions: it can raise the pH. Let it cure and rinse it before filling the pond.
  • Letting the water level drop in summer: a high water level is the first way to hide the rim.

Frequently asked questions

— Can slabs be placed directly on the edge of a preformed pond?

No. The rim is not designed to bear a load; the slabs must rest on an independent base made of mortar or compacted gravel.

— How can I hide the visible plastic below the water level?

A strip of gravelled pond liner folded over the rim, coconut planting bags, or plants placed near the edge hide the wall.

— Which plants can hide the rim of a shell?

Trailing perennials along the bank, and marginal plants installed in coconut-fiber bags or baskets near the water's edge.

— Is mortar around a pond dangerous for fish?

Fresh mortar can raise the water's pH. Let it cure completely and rinse it thoroughly before the pond water comes into contact with it.

In summary

  • Never place any weight on the shell's rim.
  • Slightly overhanging slabs on an independent base provide the cleanest finish.
  • The gravelled pond liner covers sloping areas and the visible wall.
  • Trailing plants and coconut-fiber bags give the banks a lively appearance.
  • A consistently high water level already hides a large part of the rim.
