Repairing a hole in a pond liner: the right patch for the material and size of the damage

You have finally found the hole. It is there, twenty centimeters below the coping, no larger than a match head, and it is what lowers your pond by a few centimeters every day. The good news: a localized hole in a tarp can almost always be repaired, provided you use the product intended for the tarp's material and work on a clean, dry surface. The bad news: a patch hastily applied to a wet, dirty tarp will rarely last more than one season.

First of all: what type of tarp is it?

This is the question we routinely ask at the counter, and many owners do not know the answer, especially when the pond was built by the home's previous occupant. Yet the products are not interchangeable. PVC glue does not adhere to EPDM, and butyl tape for EPDM adheres poorly to aged PVC.

A few simple guidelines to check on an accessible edge:

• EPDM: inner-tube-like appearance, matte black, rubbery feel, very flexible even in cool weather. It stretches noticeably when pulled.
• PVC: smoother surface, sometimes slightly glossy, often black but also available in green or sand. It stiffens with age and cold, and can become brittle after many years in the sun.
• Woven polyethylene or “construction” tarp: visible weave, plastic appearance. This type of tarp is difficult to repair; a patch is often only a temporary reprieve.

If you kept a leftover piece from the installation, that is ideal: it tells you the material and provides the repair patch.

Which repair for which type of damage?

The rule repeated in all manufacturers' technical data sheets is that the patch must extend several centimeters beyond the hole in every direction, roughly five centimeters at a minimum, and its corners must be rounded. A right angle is the first place where a patch starts to peel away.

Repairing an EPDM liner, step by step

1. Lower the water level by about ten centimeters below the hole. There is no need to empty the entire pond when the damage is in the upper section: a sump pump or the filtration pump is enough.
2. Clean the area well around the hole: algae, biofilm, and limescale. First use a sponge and clean water, then a clean cloth.
3. Dry completely. This is the step everyone rushes. A hair dryer or heat gun set to low can help, especially in the shade. The liner must be dry to the touch and visibly dry.
4. Apply the primer to the liner and the patch, following the drying time indicated by the manufacturer. It thoroughly cleans the rubber and prepares the surface for the tape to adhere.
5. Apply the double-sided tape to the patch, then place the patch over the hole without trapping air.
6. Press firmly with a small roller, working from the center toward the edges. The tape adheres through pressure.
7. Allow to cure before refilling with water, according to the product instructions.

Preferably work in dry, mild weather: most adhesive and tape manufacturers advise against applying them in cold or damp conditions, which compromises adhesion. A repair made on a foggy morning is a repair that will need to be redone.

Repairing a PVC liner

The principle is the same, using adhesive instead of tape. Cut a piece of flexible PVC, round off the corners, and clean and dry both surfaces. Spread the adhesive in a thin, even layer over the liner and the patch, observe the recommended waiting time, then apply the patch and press it down firmly. Placing a light weight on top while it sets helps on sloping areas.

A common case: a PVC liner installed long ago and left exposed to the sun along the banks has lost its flexibility. It cracks around the first hole as soon as it is handled. In this case, repair it to buy time, but start budgeting for its replacement.

The hole did not appear by chance

Repairing without understanding the cause means preparing to do it again. The most common causes of a localized hole:

• an edging stone or angular pebble that has rubbed against the liner, often without protective felt underneath;
• a tree or bamboo root that has punctured it from behind;
• a tool used during cleaning, or a dog's claw on a sloping bank;
• a rodent digging at the foot of the bank.

If the cause is behind the liner, a patch on the water side is not always enough: you need to clear the area, remove the stone or root, and lay new geotextile fabric before closing it up again.

What if the hole cannot be found?

A dropping water level is not necessarily a hole. Evaporation in hot weather, a splashing waterfall, a liner edge that has sagged below the water level, or a dripping filter connection: these causes are far more common than a puncture. Before buying anything, turn off the pump and observe where the water level stabilizes. If it always stops at the same height, the hole is at that height.

— Can a pond liner be repaired underwater?

Some sealants are advertised as suitable for use in wet conditions, but for a lasting repair, nothing replaces a dry surface. Lowering the water level below the hole remains the best option.

— Is bathroom silicone suitable?

No. Many bathroom silicones contain fungicides that are harmful to fish and adhere poorly to EPDM. Use a product intended for pond liners.

— How long does a properly installed patch last?

On a liner in good condition, a patch made of the same material and properly glued generally lasts as long as the liner itself. On PVC that has already hardened, it is much less certain.

— Do the fish need to be removed during the repair?

Not if you lower the water level by only a few dozen centimeters. Keep aeration running and avoid letting glue or primer fall into the water.
