The Brachygobius Doriae, commonly called the "bee fish," is a fascinating species native to the brackish and fresh waters of Southeast Asia. Recognizable by its yellow and black stripes resembling a bee, this small peaceful fish is perfect for specialized or well-arranged community aquariums. With its intriguing behavior and bright colors, it makes a captivating addition for aquarium enthusiasts.

Main Features:

  • Size: 1.2 to 2 cm, ideal for nano aquariums or as a single element in community tanks.
  • Origin: Rivers, estuaries, and brackish zones of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
  • Behavior:
    • Territorial but peaceful, it prefers to be kept in small groups of 4 to 6 individuals.
    • Active and curious, it spends most of its time near the substrate or hiding spots.
  • Ideal water parameters:
    • pH: 6.5 – 7.5
    • Temperature: 24 – 28°C
    • Hardness: 5 – 15°dGH
    • Fresh to slightly brackish water (adding salt is recommended to simulate their natural habitat).
  • Diet: Carnivorous, it feeds on small live or frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms) and occasionally accepts micro pellets.

Why choose the Brachygobius Doriae?

  • Distinctive appearance:
    • Its vibrant yellow and black stripes add an exotic and bright touch to the aquarium.
  • Captivating behavior:
    • Its constant exploration and interactions with its peers make it a pleasure to watch.
  • Suitable for nano aquariums:
    • Its small size and discreet behavior make it perfect for compact aquariums.
  • Community compatibility:
    • Suitable with calm tank mates in well-arranged aquariums.

Tips for a better experience:

  • Aquarium setup:
    • Prepare a tank of at least 30 liters with sturdy plants, roots, and hiding places like tubes or caves to simulate their natural habitat.
    • A fine or sandy substrate is recommended for their comfort.
  • Compatibility:
    • Coexists well with calm species like dwarf rasboras, shrimp, or other small bottom-dwelling fish.
    • Avoid aggressive or large fish that could stress them.
  • Water quality:
    • Maintain gentle filtration and perform regular water changes to ensure clean, well-oxygenated water. Add a small amount of marine salt to recreate slightly brackish conditions.
  • Varied diet:
    • Provide a high-quality carnivorous diet to maintain their health and enhance their colors.
