--Traditionally, Native Americans use abalone shell to burn leaves of healing plants such as sage and yerba santa. A shell of the genus haliotis, it is also known as abalone (anglicism) or Venus' ear. The shell is formed by microscopic layers of calcium carbonate that are welded together by a protein substance. When it receives a blow, this structure is able to absorb the energy of the blow instead of breaking, which makes it extremely resistant. The inner part of the shell is covered with mother-of-pearl, hence the iridescent reflections that characterize it.
In different cultures, the abalone shell is a symbol of strength, protection and balance; for Apache women, it marks the passage from childhood to adulthood. Using an abalone shell in a purification ritual is to invoke the power of the four elements: the fire of the match that ignites, the spirit of the ocean that permeates the shell, the plant that concentrates the best of the earth and the aromatic smoke that spreads in the air.
In the purification process of fumigation, the four elements are represented:
The shell comes from water, the match that lights is fire, the grass and ashes are earth, and finally the smoke, the air element.
How to use it:
Pour some sand or marble sand (ref. ME090) into the shell. Light the stick of the plant of your choice, then extinguish the flame. Place it in the shell, which you support with one hand. With the other hand, send the aromatic smoke towards the places or objects you wish to purify. When you are finished, place the shell on its wooden support (ref. Q017 recommended) or on a heat-resistant surface.
Please note: the shape and size of each abalone shell varies depending on the arrivals. There may be some natural imperfections, more or less regular contours, as well as traces of burning. These defects are completely specific to this item, these shells are treated by hand from the opening to the drying of the shell.
