“Daruma, Daruma: I choose a goal and draw you one eye. When I reach it, I will draw you the other.”

In Japan, students of all ages use the turquoise Daruma to succeed in their exams. It can also be used for all kinds of personal challenges.

Daruma: what is it?

Daruma, also called a wish doll, is a Japanese good luck charm. Made of papier-mâché, it represents the monk Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. According to legend, he attained enlightenment after meditating alone in a cave for 9 years, but lost his arms and legs which had atrophied. Hence the distinctive shape of Daruma.

What to do with a Daruma

Choose a goal and draw the first eye on the Daruma. When you have reached it, draw the second eye as a sign of gratitude. As a learning experience, note how you achieved your goal: it will be a moment of great personal satisfaction.

The spirit of Daruma

This figurine reminds us that if we are determined and persistent, we will reach the goal we set. In this sense, it is essential that the goal be specific and achievable. It is not about buying a Daruma and then waiting for things to happen magically: Daruma motivates us and invites us to strive for success. In Japan, any occasion is good to give a Daruma, especially birthdays and New Year.

Burning your Daruma

In Japan, the Daruma lasts one year—whether the goal is reached or not—and every January 18, thousands of used figurines are burned in temples. In Europe, take advantage of St. John’s Day or your favorite holiday to perform this ritual. You can then choose other Darumas for your new goals. This Daruma was designed in Japan and made in Vietnam with recycled paper from Japan.
