Which Saki-Hikari to give based on the water temperature? The season-by-season calendar

Koi are cold-blooded fish: their digestion speeds up or slows down with the water temperature. A food that is perfect in July can become difficult to digest in October. To choose the right Saki-Hikari formula, the first tool is not the catalog but the thermometer: adjust the formula, quantity, and frequency to the pond's actual temperature. Here is the schedule we recommend, as a general guide.

— The short answer

Below around 10 degrees, stop feeding or reduce it to a minimum, using a highly digestible food. At approximately 10 to 15 degrees, use Saki-Hikari Multi Season (or wheat germ food) in small quantities. Above approximately 15 degrees, gradually switch to Balance, then, during the height of the warm season and with good filtration, Growth or Color can be introduced. The exact recommended ranges appear on each package and take precedence over this guide.

Why temperature changes everything

In cold-blooded fish, digestive enzyme activity depends directly on temperature. In cool water, digestion slows down: protein-rich food remains in the intestine longer, is poorly digested, and may ferment. At the same time, filter bacteria also work more slowly and process waste less effectively. In warm water, the opposite is true: faster metabolism, strong appetite, possible growth, but also higher oxygen requirements.

Saki-Hikari formulas are designed for these different situations. The manufacturer specifies a recommended usage range for each one; the following explains the general logic.

The temperature range chart

Water temperature (approximate range) Recommended formula Frequency and quantity
Below around 10 degrees Stop feeding, or offer a highly digestible food in tiny amounts if the fish are begging At most, a few pellets every few days
Approximately 10 to 15 °C Saki-Hikari Multi Season, or wheat germ food Small portions, once a day or less
Approximately 15 to 20 °C Transition from Multi Season to Balance Once or twice a day, moderate portions
Approximately 20 to 25 °C Balance, with Growth or Color as a supplement Several small meals per day
Above 25-26 °C Balance, reduced portions Reduce quantities, monitor oxygen

Measure the temperature at the bottom, where the koi stay, preferably in the morning: this is the lowest value of the day and the safest one to use when deciding. A surface thermometer in full sun in the afternoon may show several degrees more.

Spring: increase gently

In spring, the most common mistake is starting again too quickly, as soon as the first beautiful days arrive. The water warms up at the surface, the koi beg for food, but their digestive and immune systems are not yet fully active, and the filter has barely restarted. Start with Multi Season or a wheat-germ food, in small portions, and increase them only when the temperature remains stable for several days. A return of cold weather means going back a step.

Summer: Balance as the staple, Growth and Color as options

When the water stays above around twenty degrees, Balance becomes the staple food. This is also when Growth and Color deliver their best results, because koi digest and assimilate nutrients fully. Many enthusiasts alternate: Balance daily, Growth for young fish, and Color for a few meals per week for fish with color potential.

Beware of high temperatures: above twenty-five or twenty-six degrees, the water holds less oxygen while the fish consume more of it. Reduce portions, split meals, and ensure aeration at night.

Autumn: reduce feeding before the cold

In autumn, you follow the reverse process. As soon as the water stays below around twenty degrees, reduce Growth and Color, then switch back to Balance, and finally to Multi Season when the water approaches fifteen degrees. The last few weeks of feeding should give the koi time to empty their intestines before the hard frosts: gradually reduce the quantities and frequency.

A common case: a beautiful sunny autumn, with warm afternoons, misleads the owner into continuing to feed as in summer. Yet cold nights cause the water temperature to drop. Once again, rely on the morning measurement.

Classic mistakes

  • Changing formulas overnight instead of mixing the two foods for one to two weeks.
  • Giving Growth in cool water to “catch up” on growth: this is the opposite of what you should do.
  • Feeding according to the air weather forecast rather than the water temperature.
  • Keeping the same quantity all year round, regardless of the season.
  • Forgetting that uneaten food left for more than a few minutes pollutes the pond.

Frequently asked questions

— At what temperature should Saki-Hikari Balance be given?

As a general guideline, when the water remains above around fifteen degrees, with a gradual transition from Multi Season. The range indicated on the packaging takes precedence.

— Can Saki-Hikari Growth be given in spring?

It is better to wait until the water is consistently warm. In cool water, rich growth food is difficult to digest and unnecessarily loads the pond.

— Should koi be fed in winter?

Below around ten degrees, stop feeding or reduce feeding to a minimum with highly digestible food. Koi live off their reserves.

— Where should the water temperature be measured to choose the food?

At the level where the fish stay, ideally in the morning, when the temperature is lowest of the day.

In summary

  • The water temperature, measured in the morning, determines the formula and quantity.
  • Cool water: Multi Season or wheat germ, in small portions.
  • Temperate to warm water: Balance, with Growth or Color as a supplement.
  • Make gradual transitions over one to two weeks, in spring and autumn alike.
  • The recommended ranges on the packaging take precedence over the general guidelines.
