How to eliminate mosquitoes from the garden pond?

Gambusia

Gambusia does not measure more than 5 cm. It is a close cousin of the guppy. They were introduced by the aquarium hobby and voluntarily by man with the aim of regulating a species of insect that bugs us in summer, it is the mosquito. It is a heavy consumer of mosquito larvae that live in water. Gambusia is a fish with exceptional characteristics. It is a fish that comes from South America, which is able to withstand 7 days in seawater, while it is basically a freshwater fish. It therefore tolerates brackish water very well. It is a fish that can survive another, which goes down to -4 degrees, and which goes up beyond 42 degrees. It supports very well the differences in temperature and oxygenation of the water.

It is an ovoviviparous fish. It has a strong reproductive capacity. A dozen fry can be born in 48 hours. In France, it is the only freshwater aquatic fish to be ovoviviparous . The eggs hatch in the belly of the female. The babies will develop in the female's womb and will be laid.

The babies that will be born will look exactly like an adult. At any time in the stage, from the moment they have been fertilized, the female, if she senses her death is coming, she can, with a so-called lethal contraction, expel them to save them. This ensures that babies are protected until the end. It makes fewer babies, that is to say between 50 and 100. But on the other hand, it has a ratio and a survival rate that is clearly higher than those of the other fish that lay them and abandon them. So that's how it colonized the whole of France.

This species is said today naturalized, ie it could have been an invasive species, but it does not pose a problem to the environment and regulates mosquitoes. It serves as forage fish, that is to say the base of the food chain, so it is considered naturalized. So, if you have a goldfish pond or a pond with water lilies, don't hesitate to put some Gambusia, it will reduce the number of mosquitoes flying in your garden. You should know that many mosquitoes fly away and do not go more than a few hundred meters around the point where they are born.

So, basically, when you have lots of mosquitoes in your home, it's because you or one of your neighbors is growing them. And especially the one that scares everyone. The tiger mosquito. The tiger mosquito, it does not move more than 200 to 300 meters from where it was born and it loves rotten waters.

Another way to get rid of mosquitoes

Fountains and waterfalls create a backwater preventing mosquitoes from landing easily on the water. Standing water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is therefore necessary to move your water constantly. Use an air pump.
